Forget diesel –electric hybrid buses! Hundreds of eBUS-12 pure electric buses are now running in 4 Chinese cities, including Shenzen, Changsha, Shaoguan and Xi’an, offering nose and air pollution-free public transit for urban areas whose air quality usually suffers from particulates emitted by diesel vehicles. The eBUS-12 was introduced in Europe at a car show in Belgium in October 2011 and Hertz just announced the use of eBuses at Los Angeles airport. Each e-Bus allows for a reduction of 95 tons/year of carbon dioxide and 30% lower operating costs than conventional diesel buses. BYD just won a contract to supply the city of Windsor Ontario (Canada) with a fleet of 10 all-electric buses- a first for any North American city. BYD has also introduced e6 Taxis with a pilot project in Shenzhen in 2010.
Key Quotes:
"Features of the eBUS-12:
- 12 meters long… electronically controlled air suspension..low-floor and ample space to allow easy passenger loading and unloading
- solar cells installed on top of eBUS-12 can supply more power to supplement the Fe battery (and allow charging during off-peak hours)
- The energy consumption of the eBUS-12 is less than 100 kWh per 60 miles..can be fully charged in 3 hours or 6 hours with two different chargers.. can be recharged in as little as 30 minutes with BYD's own 600-kilowatt rapid charging system
- The “Fe” battery used on eBUS-12 is non-polluting ….Iron-Phosphate batteries used in these electric buses are the only rechargeable battery systems that contain no heavy metals, toxic electrolytes or use caustic materials in their production
- 250 km range on a single charge
- Unitary construction body, 4-wheel disc brake, ABS, and ASR”
